If you’ve damaged a tooth, it’s not the end of the world! Thanks to modern technology, your dentist can provide you with an incredibly natural-looking crown that will protect your tooth and restore your oral function. But what does the whole treatment process look like?
The steps are slightly different depending on whether you opt for a traditional crown or a CEREC same-day restoration. To get all the details, keep reading!
The Consultation
The very first appointment you’ll have with your dentist is a consultation. It’s important for them to get an idea of what your expectations are, and also to check on your overall oral health. Think of it as quality control; your dentist will thoroughly examine your teeth to make sure you can adequately support a dental crown and will be happy with your results.
Administering Anesthesia
When it’s time to proceed with your treatment, you’ll return to the office to get started on the dental work. Don’t worry – you won’t be going through the process without numbing agents! Your dentist will administer a local anesthesia to make sure your discomfort is minimal.
Cleaning and Reshaping Your Tooth
You might think the next step is to create and place your crown, but actually, it’s to reshape your affected tooth and clean up any debris. This will make room for the crown, so that it fits seamlessly and comfortably in your dental line up!
Multi-Day Crowns Vs. One-Day Crowns
If you go the traditional route and schedule a multi-day treatment, you won’t actually receive your permanent crown for another week or two. The impression results captured during your consultation will be sent to a dental lab, where skilled technicians will work hard to create the perfect crown for you. In the meantime, your dentist will provide you with a temporary restoration to protect your tooth from further harm.
With CEREC technology, on the other hand, you could have your permanent crown fabricated and placed in just a few hours! Instead of sending your impression data to a lab, your dentist will design your crown digitally and have the CEREC machine craft it out of a chunk of porcelain reserved for this exact occasion. CEREC guided crowns are typically more expensive, but many patients find the time saved to be absolutely worth it.
Enjoy Improved Oral Function!
No matter which treatment plan is best for you, you can expect to experience improved oral function when all is said and done! With your tooth secured, chewing will be easier and safer, and your bite will rest much more comfortably. Enjoy the fruits of your treatment, and don’t forget to thank your dentist.
